Portable Sewing Machines

Portable Sewing Machines

When looking for a portable sewing machine, I’d recommend sticking with the major brands like Singer and Brother. There are plenty of other manufacturers out there, but the old adage “you get what you pay for” really is true in this case. There are some companies out there that make portables with names you’ve likely never heard of before. Not that all no name companies produce junk, but you’ll likely have trouble getting customer service on the phone, or even getting your portable sewing machine repaired down the road.

Singer is probably the most well known maker of portable sewing machines, with Brother right behind them.

Singer’s most popular – and least costly – model is the Singer 2250. But, most folks want a case with their portable sewing machine, so be prepared to spend another $30 for that.

This machine will take care of your basic sewing needs. Unlike some of the top end models that Singer makes, this unit is an uncomplicated machine that you can learn how to operate very quickly. Simply thread the machine and you can start sewing right away. Super easy stitch selection along with an automatic 4 step buttonhole give you both convenience and creativity.

This is a nice portable unit and with the Singer name, you’ll know that if you have any trouble with it, you’ll be protected by their 25 year limited warranty.

With Brother, you’ll want to check out the Brother XL2610 Free-Arm Portable Sewing Machines. Like the popular Singer 2250, you’ll have to purchase the case separately. The Brother setup will set you back around $150, so it is a bit more expensive than the Singer, but it seems that most who are looking for a portable machine like this one a bit better.

Like the Singer, this machine is very easy to use and is a great first machine. While bobbin winding and changing stitches can be a hassle with some portables, they aren’t on this one. For a small machine, the reverse, free arm and size are definite selling points as well.

The downsides of this particular model (like many sewing machines these days) is that it’s pretty much entirely plastic. In the case of this unit, it could be problematic if you are not gentle with it. The presser foot lever is something that could easily be broken if you put too much pressure on it. But, as I said, if you are careful with this, you’ll have no problems.

This machine really is a nice first machine, or great for a second machine that you need to take with you on the go. It can handle multiple layers of denim to very light fabrics with everything in between. Just change out the needle to suit the fabric you are using and you are good to go.
